Returning to Golf: Safety Tips to Follow During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a drastic toll on almost everything, and golf is no exception. Golfers from around the world have been eagerly waiting to return to the golf landscape, but all they can do is play at home using a golf course simulator — which isn’t bad at all. However, with the COVID-19 restrictions slowly lifting up across the nation, courses are now opening, and their maintenance is also in place. This means golfers can pick up their clubs and hit the green in the midst of this pandemic — but only if they follow safety rules to avoid catching and spreading the virus.

Here are some of the recommended measures you must follow while playing golf during COVID-19:

Wash Hands Frequently

While this measure also applies to golfers playing indoor using a golf home simulator, it is especially important for those playing on the course. This is because you hold the club or golf ball with your hands, so the risk of infection is extremely high. As per the World Health Organization, you should wash your hands thoroughly and frequently for at least 20 seconds using soap and water or alcohol-based rub to kill the germs and virus. Washing your hands frequently while playing the sport can help you stay safe during the pandemic. Plus, it’s also a good idea to sanitize your club and golf ball before and after playing the game.

Do not touch M.E.N

When you engage in physical activity, sweating is natural. With sweat comes the temptation to touch your face or forehead to wipe away the sweat. However, the times are different in 2020. Touching your mouth, eyes, and nose— hence M.E.N — will increase the risk of contracting COVID-19. Avoid doing that when on the course of golf.

Put on a face mask

Wearing a face mask on the golf course is of paramount importance, as it helps curb the spread of respiratory droplets that contain the virus. These droplets are released into the air when we breathe, talk, sing, and shout. So, by wearing a mask during the game, especially when you are conversing with your tutor or teammate, you reduce the risk of infecting your fellow golfers with the virus.

Maintain social distance

Golfers often get quite close to each other when playing golf. However, standing close to each other during the pandemic is a formal invitation to COVID-19 infection. Make sure you maintain the distance of at least two meters from other players. This also means avoiding handshakes and high-five during the game.

Final note

While golf courses are strategically opening in the states, it’s still advised to remain indoors and play at home with the help of indoor golf equipment, such as golf course simulators and others.
